FROM BIOMASS
TO BIOCHAR

The WASTX Carbon technology efficiently converts biomass into high-quality biochar, providing a dual solution for waste management and soil enrichment to support a greener, carbon-neutral future.

Based on the TCR® technology
developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT

CO₂ REDUCTION WITH BIOMASS PYROLYSIS

The WASTX Carbon carbonizes a wide variety of biomasses in an oxygen-free environment; a process known as pyrolysis – a much better alternative to incineration. Biomass is transformed into biochar & green energy, preventing the carbon captured by the biomass during its lifetime to re-enter the atmosphere.

HIGH TECH PAYS OFF

WASTX Carbon’s innovative design offers diverse revenue streams: from biochar and CO2 certificates to high electricity generation, unlocking new business opportunities.

Highest Quality Biochar

The biochar produced is upgraded through a reformer and can be used or sold as (certifiable) CO₂ storage, fertilizer, energy source & more.

Green Energy Production

Besides the highest quality biochar, you can also obtain heat & electricity by reforming the pyrolysis gas. The el power can be then linked to the grid.

CO2-Negative Solution

Around 1 ton of CO2 is bound per ton of input material. Thus, businesses can receive CO2 certificates, enabling profitable certificate trading.

WASTX Carbon MEETS REALITY

Case Study 1  ⟩

Biogas Plant Operator
Date: March, 2024

Location: West Germany

Summary: Locations of biogas plants are ideal for expansion with a carbonization plant. Thanks to existing permits, available biomass resources, and existing infrastructure, the conditions are perfect. In this project, local forest residues are processed into biochar, and the resulting waste heat is used to dry the wood chips. Particularly noteworthy is the use of digestate from the biogas plant. A patented process from one of our partner companies transforms the mixture of biochar and nutrient-rich digestate into valuable Terra Preta. This creates an attractive business case through a circular economy.

Case Study 2  ⟩

Waste Wood Processing
Date: May, 2024

Location: South Germany

Summary: The project planned to use abundant waste wood from Saxon forests, previously sold as fuel, more efficiently through pyrolysis. Utilizing an existing hall at the site, a WASTX carbon biomass pyrolysis plant was installed, with plans to expand and include additional plants and energy recovery systems. This setup not only converts wood into biochar, sold to Terra Preta producers, but also generates extra income from electricity sales and CO₂ certificates. Thus, significantly enhancing the site's profitability.
